The First Day Of School
The yellow lights flashing in the School Zone was a reminder that the kids are back in school and yet I was going to work. It seems unusual because I remember the days when Lori and I both went up to the school on the first day, new backpack in hand, with our child. We anxiously looked for our child's name to see which teacher would be ours. The "Insiders" stood at a distance with a smile because they already knew their teacher. (Oh the politics in early elementary school.) I remember trying to look interested as the parents fought over who would be the " Homeroom Mother." Those days are gone for us. Caleb is in the fifth grade and most parents' schedules are too full or the battle scars of past homeroom experiences run too deep. I wonder if there is a support group for burned out Homeroom Moms? The blank remains - well - blank.
For the girls the first day of school has more to do with what to wear than which classes we will go to. That means, drum roll, they're back in my bathroom. We have curling irons, flat irons, blow dryers, and all kinds of moose, gel, and sprays. I can't believe I haven't been electrocuted with all the wires so close to the sink! Next time we remodel I am going to make sure the worst bathroom in the house is mine. I will make sure that there will be no outlets, mirrors, or cabinets in my bathroom.
Hailey and Caleb are at the top of their school. Seniors! Next year's article will be different with Hailey going to college and Caleb going into Middle school. That is why I hope this year will be good. What I love about the first day is that it is a brand new start. The folders are new and the paper is white and our clothes are pressed. We have a new beginning. The words of Jeremiah come to mind. Hidden in Lamentations is the bold proclamation that God's love and compassion never fails. As a matter of fact it is New every morning! Great is His faithfulness. Yesterday is his-tory, Tomorrow is a mystery, Today is a gift - that's why it's called "the present."
