Walking on the Water!

In a small group Bible study the teacher began discussing Peter walking on the water. The story takes place in Matthew 14:25-32. The teacher described how a storm on the water at 3:00 - 6:00 in the morning is a frightful experience. He described Jesus walking on the water must have surprised the fishermen turned apostles. This feat was not something they could have dreamed of. Matthew simply records that they were terrified. Jesus then encourages them by saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

If the story ended we would have to deal with Jesus having the ability to walk on water. However, the story isn't over. Peter calls out asking Jesus if he can walk on the water too. Jesus answers, "Come on Rocky the water is fine." (That is my rough paraphrase of the verse.) So Peter jumps out of the boat and walks on the water. Everything was great until Peter realized that rocks don't float very well. He felt the wind in his face, saw the storm clouds and he began to sink. All Peter could think of was, "Lord Save ME!" Immediately Jesus grabbed his hand and asked, "Why did you doubt?" Have you ever wondered how they got back to the boat? Did they walk together? Did Jesus drag Peter in the water? Did Jesus just hold on until the boat picked them up? Who Knows?

Then the teacher asked the small group, "What did we learn about this text?" The first girl raised her hand and said, "Um, that I'm supposed to trust myself more." Wow! The lesson of this story is just the opposite. We need to trust in Jesus more. How many times do we turn Bible study into another self help message? I'll give you a self help message, "Lord Save Me!" I need a Savior. I need my sins washed away. I need you to change my life. I need the fruit of your Spirit! I need Jesus to call me out of the boat.
